TIRANA, 8 June 2007 - The OSCE Presence in Albania welcomes the declaration today of final results of the country's local government elections by the Albanian Central Election Commission (CEC).

The declaration of the final results marks the conclusion of the protracted process of the local government elections of 18 February 2007 that was preceded by difficult political negotiations.

The Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, Ambassador Pavel Vacek, said: "It is good that the uneasy process is concluded after two rounds of election re-runs. The job is completed for the Albanian election administration, namely for the CEC with which we have co-operated throughout the process. All elected local government representatives can now concentrate on their work under their new 4-year mandate."

The OSCE Presence remains willing to work with Albanian and other partners in pursuing international recommendations, including those in the OSCE/ODIHR Final Report on the Albanian Local Government Elections of 5 June 2007 and to assist in further improving the Albanian electoral system according to international standards.
